Madewell is a company with two histories. It first started with a family business run by the Nosowitz family that opened in 1937, selling durable workwear, including corduroy-lined jackets and heavy-duty pants. This company would thrive for many years, only beginning to decline in the 80s. Its last factory would close in 1989, but that wouldn’t be where its story ends. In 2006, 17 years later, it would be picked up by the J.Crew company to produce hard-wearing “clothing for the honest woman .” The reason for its purchase by a company that was already thriving?
