About Macy’s Credit Card

Macy’s Inc. was first founded by Rowland Hussey Macy in 1851, though he had opened other stores before this. Rowland opened this Macy’s store in 1851 to serve mill employees in Haverhill, Massachusetts. None of these initial four stores were successful, but they were learning experiences. In 1858, he would try again, opening the R. H. Macy & Co. store on Sixth Avenue. It was the only dry goods store in that part of town, doing $11.08 in business on its first day. This was the equivalent of $347.02 today. The business would begin a period of strong growth, absorbing nearby buildings and opening more departments. It would rapidly expand, becoming an iconic part of New York and American commercial history. Today, 163 years later, its headquarters remain located in New York City, governing over 510 stores worldwide.
