Starlink builds on an idea that was first brought to light in the 1980s as part of the SDI, or Strategic Defense Initiative. While the concept was originally developed for defense and military use, it evolved into a project focused on providing global high-speed internet to the world by the year 2000. This led to the founding of SpaceX in 2002.
In 2014, rumor had it that Elon Musk and Greg Wyler were working towards releasing a constellation of 700 satellites, marking the beginning of Starlink. Still, the initial satellites were not sent into orbit for testing until 2018. Thousands more satellites would be launched into orbit in the ensuing years, building a LEO (low earth orbit) network of satellites. Most recently, the American military has identified the potential value of these networks and has begun investigating their functionality for defense purposes.
