About Nordstrom
The founder of Nordstrom, John W. Nordstrom, was born in Northern Sweden on February 15, 1871. He moved to the US at 16 years of age in 1887. He changed his name from Johan Nordström to John Nordstrom. He would save enough to purchase a 20-acre potato farm in Washington State before moving to take part in the Klondike Gold Rush. He was moderately successful, hitting gold within two years of arriving. Rather than working the claim himself, he sold it for $13,000. He would then return to Seattle and use this money to begin the Nordstrom chain. Over the ensuing years, it would become a thriving luxury department store that is a household name worldwide.
