The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) was established in 1991 by Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney to consolidate finance and accounting operations, reduce costs, and strengthen financial management throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). Its creation aimed to standardize, consolidate, and improve accounting and financial functions, with the intent of reducing the cost of the Department’s finance and accounting operations.
Today, DFAS is the largest financial and accounting operation in the world, processing a vast number of pay transactions and commercial invoices annually. The agency’s mission is to lead the Department of Defense in finance and accounting by providing exceptional quality pay and financial information. It pays all DoD military and civilian personnel, retirees, annuitants, and major DoD contractors and vendors while also supporting customers outside the DoD as part of electronic government initiatives.
