About Kmart

Kmart was established by one S.S. Kresge in 1897 after being inspired by meeting Frank Winfield Woolworth of Woolworths. This store and the one to follow it in Detroit in 1898 were the first S.S. Kresge stores, one of which would be passed into the possession of his partner John McCrory. This exchange gave S.S. Kresge complete control over the shop in Detroit in conjunction with Charles J. Wilson, his brother-in-law. By 1912, there were 85 stores in the US, and that was the year that the company first became incorporated. By 1918, it was present on the stock market.

It wasn’t until 1962 that the first Kmart was opened, a store that remained open until March of 2017. 2002 was a hard year for Kmart, seeing it file for bankruptcy and then come into possession of Sears. The current world sees Kmart in a steady decline, with dozens of stores closing with each passing year. Only time will tell if this is the end of the Kmart line.
