JetBlue was opened in 1999 by David Neeleman, though at that time it was known as “NewAir.” Its goal was customer service and comfort from the very beginning, combining low-cost airfare with high-end amenities like XM Radio and a TV at every seat. Their motto? “To bring humanity back to air travel.” Airline travel used to be a luxurious affair even for the cheap seats, with the airlines seeking to emulate the comfort and adventure of traveling by cruise ship or luxury train.
In September of that same year, they were granted a total of 75 spots at the airport in recognition of their commitment to excellence. Their airlines were considered so safe, and so secure, that they continued to turn a profit even after the 2001 tragedy in New York.
