This company was created to address an imbalance in insurance rates in the 1920s. In spite of having fewer accidents and claims than drivers who lived in the city, farmers paid the same for auto insurance as they did. It was this situation that inspired the Ohio Farm Bureau to create an insurance company of its own. The group, then known as Farm Bureau Mutual, went into business with 1,000 people pledged to become policyholders, ten times the amount required by Ohio Law.
1928 saw the company expand its offerings to five other states, adding small-town residents to what had been a strictly farmers-only policy up till then and adding larger city residents not much later. In 1934, it also saw substantial growth thanks to the purchase of a fire insurance company that had been underperforming. Steady growth continued, and in 1955, the company changed its name to Nationwide Insurance to reflect its new reality. Now, it stands as one of the largest insurance companies in the world, with hundreds of subsidiary companies and millions of policyholders.
