The WEC Energy group started in 1896, as many energy companies of its time did, on the East Coast and as part of a railway and light conglomerate providing services based on the back of excess electricity supplied for their interurban trains. They began innovating using crushed coal to provide electricity and found that it made them more efficient. In 1921, the earlier incarnation of the company produced the first power plant that would burn fuel that had been pulverized.

For the first 13 years of its operation, the Wisconsin Electric Power Company stood as the world’s most efficient plant of its type.
