Safeway was founded in 1915. Currently, there are over 1,300 locations. Most stores have a deli counter, a meat department, a produce section, a flower department, a bakery, a pharmacy, a liquor section, and, most recently, a section of organic foods.
The founder, Marion Barton Skaggs, purchased his father’s grocery store in American Falls, Idaho. By 1926, Skaggs had opened 427 other stores when he decided to merge his company with Safeway.
Safeway’s name came from the idea that the store operated on a cash-only basis. This was the “safe way” for families to shop because they could not overextend themselves by buying on credit.
Safeway innovated the grocery shopping experience. They introduced produce pricing by the pound, added “sell by” dates, and added nutrition labels and parking lots.
Currently, Safeway is offering online grocery delivery services to select markets.
Safeway is one of Albertson’s companies.
