The Montgomery paper began publication in 1829 as The Planter’s Gazette in Montgomery County and became the Montgomery Advertiser in 1833. R.F. Hudson worked for the paper and eventually purchased all the newspaper’s stock. He then bought their competition, The Alabama Journal, in the United States. Carmage Walls purchased the paper in 1963. Multimedia Corp owned it from 1968 to 1995. In 1995, the Gannett Company acquired the paper.
The Montgomery Advertiser, part of USA Today Network, is the largest daily newspaper published in Alabama. Although the paper has been awarded three Pulitzer Prizes throughout its history, it has a regrettable past. The paper supported white supremacy and wrote that lynchings were necessary. The newspaper has since apologized for spreading hate.
The Montgomery Advertiser is affiliated with USA Today.
