JetBlue was a bit of a latecomer to the airline game, first being formed in 1998 under the auspices of David Neeleman. Recognizing its place in the industry as a newcomer, it was then named “New Air” and sought to nose its way into the game with low-cost travel options while including in-flight entertainment, Sirius XM radio, and a T.V. in every seat. Neeleman believed that passengers in the airline industry had begun to be thought of as little more than cargo and sought to “Bring humanity back to air travel.” Through canny negotiations, he managed to get the airline space at JFK International with 75 landing/take-off spots. After landing this deal in 1999, it finally began scheduling flights and transporting passengers in Feb 2000. The original name was set to undergo several changes during its initial stages, but JetBlue was ultimately settled on before it ever took flight. Today, the company has 243 aircraft in its fleet and serves 102 destinations, holding fast to the promise ensconced in its slogan “You Above All.”
