About the NRA

The National Rifle Association was organized by two Union Civil War veterans who were discouraged by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops during the war. General Ambrose Burnside was the NRA’s first president in 1871. The NRA opened a practice range for firearms training and competitive shooting programs, but political opposition forced them to move the range to New Jersey.

The NRA formed the Institute for Legislative Action in 1975 to defend the Second Amendment. Besides overseeing the legislature around gun ownership, the parent organization continues to offer training and education to gun owners. They offer gun safety courses where individuals can learn NRA gun safety rules and know how to use them. They also provide the NRA Police Firearms Instructor certification program and an opportunity each year for law enforcement members to compete in eight different pistol and shotgun NRA event matches at the National Police Shooting Championships.

The NRA produces several publications and official journal: The American Hunter, The American Rifleman, and The American Guardian.
