Scheels is a 100% employee-owned American sporting goods and entertainment retail store chain. Started by Frederick A Scheel as a small hardware and merchandise store in 1902, they expanded their merchandise to include sporting goods in the 1970s. As sporting goods became the mainstay of their sales, they converted slowly away from general hardware and merchandise entirely, opening their first “All Sports Superstore” in Grand Forks, ND, featuring rugged outdoor gear like camping equipment, sport paraphernalia for everything from football to golf, and shoes for all the popular athletic pursuits of the time.
When they converted from a family-owned business model to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, associates took even more pride in their employment for the service-oriented company that now has 32 locations across 13 states all over the United States. They’ve also surpassed the world record for the World’s Largest All Sport’s Store 4 separate times.
In 2002, while celebrating its 100th anniversary, Scheels launched an informational website that later expanded to selling gift cards in 2005, then introducing some products in 2006 as Steve M Scheel became president of the company as his dad became Scheels CEO/Chairman, entering the 5th generation of Scheels in leadership positions. The site now supports a wide array of merchandise customers are familiar with from their retail locations while offering modern conveniences like shipping and curbside pickup.
Scheels focuses on its employees and their relationship with its customers, and as a privately owned company that cares for its community, Scheels also makes a point to invest in local charities and local non-profit organizations.
