About Troy Bilt

It was 1930, and America was just beginning to feel the grip of the great depression, but it was a great inspiration that struck C.W. Kelsey, the founder of the company that would become Troy-Bilt. The pressure to cut costs and produce your own food was mounting as the depression came into full swing, and Kelsey knew that there would be a call for devices to make home gardening easier. Kelsey connected with a former employee and quickly started selling the “earth grinders” they carried. That company was Siemens, and Kelsey would go on to open Rototiller Inc. in New York in 1932, where he would do more than just distribute their devices; he would improve on them. Once he had a sufficiently different machine, he began selling them under his own brand name, Rototiller. Over 80 years later, the name “Rototiller” is synonymous with Rotary Tillers in the same way that “Kleenex” means any tissue paper, and the company is still going strong, producing some of the most respected lawn and gardening equipment in the world under the name Troy-Bilt.
