WinCo Foods began as part of an innovative new plan by Bud Williams and Ralph Ward when the company was still known as Waremart. After operating for 18 years, Waremart established an Employee Stock Ownership Plan and made a joint purchase to remove ownership of the company from the Ward Family, resulting in Waremart becoming an employee-owned company. Six years later, the company was doing exceptionally well, with 16 stores in operation and $300 million in sales happening yearly.
