In 1911 a group of residents got together with Asa Phillips, DC’s Sanitary Engineer, to determine what could be done to prevent the pollution that was getting into the streams from Prince George and Montgomery Counties and subsequently flowing into DC. The result was the WSSC, or the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, which was passed into existence by the General Assembly in 1916. From their creation, they began carefully exploring the situation as it stood and came up with solutions that would result in 22 years of construction to provide long-term answers. Today this organization is responsible for providing water services to thousands of residential customers throughout Maryland.
