In 1985, Discover acquired the Greenwood Trust Company (incorporated in 1911) and began testing out a credit card for use in Sears, Roebuck, and Company stores. The intent was to start a one-stop financial service center located in Sears stores everywhere. In 1986, Dean Witter Financial Services Group, Inc., a subsidiary of Sears, Roebuck, and Company, launched a national campaign promoting the new Discover Card. By 1993, Dean Witter Financial Services Group, Inc., spun off from Sears and became a publicly traded company known as Dean Witter, Discover & Company. Embracing the nascent internet technology of the time, DiscoverCard.com launched in 1995. In 2000, the Greenwood Trust Company name was changed to Discover Bank, and it began serving as the company’s only banking branch.
Discover Bank (member FDIC), now one of the top 30 largest banks in the United States, operates a full-service digital bank that offers a range of products, including checking, savings, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit. The bank’s checking account lacks the nuance you might find in the variety of checking accounts offered by other banks, but it is one of the few in the industry that offers cash rewards. Another great feature of a Discover Back checking account is that it offers a service that can keep your personal information off certain websites, which is a nice perk. At the same time, the Discover savings account, which is similarly limited in other features, does offer industry-leading annual percentage yields. Many of Discover’s accounts have few, if any, fees.
One downside to banking with Discover Bank is that there are no physical, brick-and-mortar locations, save one location in Delaware; all transactions must be made digitally or via a supporting bank or ATM (however, Discover does not reimburse ATM fees if you use a machine that is out of its network; take a look at the bank’s ATM finder for locations near you). That being said, customers consistently rank Discover Bank among the highest among online-only banks for its checking and savings accounts.
