DSW finds its roots in a store known as Value City, a department store retailer that was founded by Ephraim Schottenstein in 1917. A traveling salesman by trade, Ephraim would find a franchise that would become a favorite stop for customers throughout their region, especially those hunting for a bargain. By providing home goods, clothing, jewelry, and more at prices that were less than those suggested by the manufacturer, it specialized in providing factory seconds and irregular apparel.
DSW was established 50 years ago in 1969 and was bought in 1998 to be the shoe licensee for Value City. The brand continued to grow and prosper in its own right, having 48 stores just one year after being acquired by Value City. Through the next 20 years, it would experience some ups and downs but would find itself reaching into the Middle East in 2017, opening its first store in Oman.
