DTLR, originally founded as Downtown Locker Room, started in 1982 with a single store in Baltimore, Maryland. The retailer’s original focus was on athletic apparel aimed at runners, but it soon shifted its focus to inner-city youth culture and fashion. During the 1980s and 1990s, DTLR grew to a dozen stores in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C., area. By 2000, the company changed management and set its sights on expansion.
