When the Etsy site originally launched in 2005, it’s a fair bet that the creators had no idea how huge it would become. After nearly three months of grueling coding and testing, Etsy was ready to launch. Why is it called Etsy? Robert Kalin came up with a nonsense word that would capture the imagination. He succeeded in doing just that by taking the phonetic sound of the Italian phrase “eh, si” (meaning “Oh, yes”) and mishearing it as Et Si. The combination of idea, intent, and meaning all came together to create the Etsy name.

Etsy built its name on the back of a progressively more advanced set of tools that it made available to its users.
