FasTrak is an electronic toll collection system that negates stopping at a toll plaza. The system allows customers to prepay tolls through a FasTrak cav toll tag placed inside their vehicle, an overhead antenna to read toll tags and take the toll, and video cameras. FasTrak does not charge a fee for the toll tag or a fee to open a FasTrak account. Customers must, however, keep a minimum balance in a prepaid account by authorizing regular payments from a credit card.
FasTrak lanes can process about three to four times more vehicles per hour than a toll booth lane. The company works to improve transit with the United States Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation Systems. Some of the major advantages of using FasTrak are the quickness and efficiency, saving money through a discounted toll rate, allowing express lane use, and helping to provide incentives to carpool.
