About LL Bean
L.L.Bean was founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean in Freeport, Maine. Bean was an avid hunter and fisherman, but he was also an inventor, author, and outdoor enthusiast. His company began as a one-room operation selling a single product, the Maine Hunting Shoe, also known as duck boots and later as Bean Boots. Looking to build a customer base, Bean collected a list of address information for those who held hunting licenses for Maine but did not reside there and put together a circular that offered the sale of his boots through the mail. Later that year he was already selling the Maine Hunting Shoe throughout the United States in a catalog that had already reached four pages.
His dedication to success and fearlessness in the face of adversity was tested that first year when 90% of his boots got returned to him due to a defect in the design. He gave back the money as he promised, corrected the model, and kept selling them.

Leon Bean established a golden rule to “treat your customers like human beings, and they will always come back for more,” which is still a guiding principle today.
