When NFCU first came into existence in 1933, only members of the American Navy were eligible to join or were otherwise covered under the Federal Employees’ Union. The following year, President Roosevelt signed the Federal Credit Union Act into law, and the credit union opened its doors to civilian members who worked for the military as well. The Credit Union remained under the control of its members until 1951 when professional management was put in place to manage the bank rather than the members themselves.
1962 saw it take the title it holds to this very day, that of the most extensive credit union in the world. Throughout the years, the credit union has continued to expand, occasionally opening its doors to new member types, including the entire Department of Defense. Today, this credit union continues to serve these members with distinction and honor, handling their most troubling banking needs and giving them the peace of mind of working with a credit union made for and by them.
