Staying on top of your utilities and understanding the issues that affect them is an integral part of being an informed customer. Ohio Edison and First Energy make this more accessible by using social media to provide consistent information about issues affecting Ohio Edison and advancements in utility technology.
In 1930, Ohio Edison Company became a trading holding company for an immense number of electric companies, 200 in total. 1950, found it in possession of two companies for operating utilities, Ohio Edison and Pennsylvania, which continued until 1997. At that point, these companies came together with Centerior to form FirstEnergy, which owns the Ohio Public Service Company, the company once known as Ohio Edison.
The company behind Ohio Edison, FirstEnergy Corp., was formed in 1997 during the acquisition. Their original plan was to do extensive layoffs and restructure the business to help reduce costs, a process that was interrupted by an investigation by PUCO. The company would finally merge with GPU Inc., which owned Met-Ed, Penelec, and the Jersey Central Power & Light Company.
