SAWS is one of the most significant treatment plants in the United States. It was constructed in Bexar County, Texas, and is one of the largest in the county. Established in the city of San Antonio, it relies on water taken from the Edwards Aquifer, which it uses to provide water and septic service to the majority of the San Antonio metropolitan area. Owned and operated by the city of San Antonio, it was brought into operation in 1992 to bring together three groups within the local government, the Alamo Water Conservation and Reuse District, the City Water Board, and the City Wastewater Department.
