In 1846 a band of entrepreneurs and businessmen came together to form the Charleston Gas Light Company, and it is in the formation of this company that SCE&G finds its roots. In 1925 the Broad River Power Company was formed, which would be the first vestiges of the corporate structure of SCE&G found today. As the years went by, this company would grow, and in the process, it would consume utility company after utility company, expanding its reach and the customers it was responsible for with every acquisition.
As a company engaged in the distribution, transmission, generation, and sale of electricity to hundreds of thousands of customers, SCE&G is organized as a public utility. Currently, the company has multiple power generation facilities, including one nuclear plant, four hydroelectric plants, four coal-fired plants, and one pumped-storage hydroelectric plant. Together these facilities produce all the electricity needed by the hundreds of thousands of people in South Carolina who rely on SCE&G for their electric and gas services. After a merger in 2019, SCEG now operates under the Dominion Energy umbrella.
