This organization began in 1963 after the legislature passed acts leading to its creation. Two agencies had been created to facilitate these goals, but in the end, they were incorporated to ease the management and organization of these two agencies. The commuter rail lines already in operation in the city came under the control of SEPTA and eventually would lead to the merger of the New York Central and Pennsylvania railroads under Penn Central. SEPTA and New York’s railway systems shared some historical traits, not the least of which was the plan to build services in 1913 that only got constructed for a few hundred years. In all other ways, SEPTA continues to serve its community well and is one of the country’s most robust public transit transportation systems. In a region regularly suffering from congested traffic, there’s nothing so relieving as sitting back and letting someone else do the driving, an option open to you when you ride with SEPTA.
