This company serves the majority of the areas of Florida on the west coast and central areas, currently serving over 1,000,000 customers with electricity and approximately half that with natural gas services. TECO Energy services are supplied to all ranges of customers from commercial to residential, and even industrial customers throughout their service area. It first came into existence as a small company managing electric trolley systems through Tampa, which was just 12 years old at the time.
Backed by investors from Boston the company purchased Consumers Electric Light and Power and established a hydroelectric dam, leading to the first of many controversies the company has faced. 1906 saw the establishment of its first steam-powered plant and helped to promote electricity in the area by handing out light bulbs in 2013 to try to coax customers to adopt electricity. Since then, the company has grown and prospered, absorbing many other companies until it grew to its present size.
