About TOPS

The history of TOPS Markets dates back to the early 1920s when Ferrante Castellani opened his first grocery store in Niagara Falls, NY. His sons, Armand and Alfred, later took over the business and expanded it. In 1962, the group opened its first modern supermarket, a 25,000-square-foot store on Portage Road in Niagara Falls, NY, under the name Tops, which was suggested by Alfonso DiMino. The company continued to grow and expand, experiencing various ownership changes over the years. In 2021, Tops Markets and Price Chopper/Market 32 entered into a definitive merger agreement. 

As of August 2022, the company operated 149 stores and 59 gas stations/convenience stores. The chain operates full-scale supermarkets in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Tops Markets is a subsidiary of Northeast Grocery, which also owns the Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets based in Schenectady, New York. The company has a long and rich history, starting from a small grocery store and growing into a prominent supermarket chain with a strong presence in the Northeastern United States.
